Approximately one in six people in our community is impacted by the effects of addiction, this includes the loved ones of a person with an addiction. Historically, the dominant Jewish communal response to addiction has been based in denial and myth. Family members and clergy denied or minimized the problems of addiction by attributing them to other less stigmatized problems, which left people with addiction related issues marginalized and alienated. In many cases, the shame associated, prevented them from seeking help while still being connected to the Jewish community.
Recognizing the existence of myths surrounding Jews and addiction, JACS has developed Addiction 101: Myth Busters, to help break down the stereotypes and stigma and instead, encourage compassion, understanding and support for those affected by addiction.
