Naming and Shaming: Jewish Names in German History

About two hundred years ago, Jews in Germany were required to adopt names that would conform to the normal first-name last-name pattern of German names. Yet at the same time Jews were not supposed to assume names that sounded too Germanic since this might conceal their Jewish identities. This lecture-discussion will begin with some stories about controversies concerning Jewish names in Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries and then move on to a general conversation about how Jewish names can reflect different patterns of assimilation, acculturation and group identification.
