"Teach us to use all our days, That we may attain a heart of wisdom." Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi reminds us that Elders are wisdom keepers who have an on-going responsibility for maintaining society's well-being and safeguarding the health of our ailing planet." To re-examine familiar viewpoints and explore alternatives ones, a person must have wisdom and courage. This is achieved by an inner journey of self-reflection and the ability to enlarge our vision of life. J. R. Staude in his book, Wisdom and Age, writes, "Wisdom is a state of the human mind characterized by profound understanding and deep insight. It is the knowledge that comes from an accumulation of countless responsibilities and changes that a life demands. A long life with many experiences generally results in mature judgement, understanding and acceptance of one's self and others. Wisdom requires remembering successes and mistakes. It is an awareness of wholeness which, at the same times, does not lose light of all of the particulars. We will explore relationship with family of origin, spouses, children, friends and aquaintances, regrets and gratitude. We will learn how to cultivate empathy and compassion and the limitations of reverence. Hopefully we will gain a deeper appreciation of the here and now of mindful awareness.
