As remarkable as the story of the establishment of the modern State of Israel is, in one respect the Zionist revolution was totally unique and unprecedented: the revival of a language that for all of it's vitality, had not been used as a day-to-day, spoken vernacular in almost two thousand years. Such linguistic revivals have been attempted elsewhere (Ireland, for example), but without much success. What was the secret to Hebrew's success? Hint: It has much more to do with Yiddish, and less with Eliezer Ben-Yehudah, than you might think!
