It didn’t make it into the final version of Torah. It’s not there in the weekly Parashah reading, Vayeshev, incorporating Genesis 39 and the whole Joseph Egypt thing. But Talmud, Masechet Yoma 35b, restores the lost outtake and records the matter: Joseph, upon persistent prodding and attempts at seduction by Potiphar’s wife, up and recites the morning blessings of our liturgy! We’ll work our way through this wild anachronism, and why the Rabbis might nevertheless have found such an implausible seduction scene compelling and instructive. We’ll try to make some sense of the interplay between Written Torah and Oral Torah.
